Most GPs in East Yorkshire stopped routinely syringing ears years ago, which left a lot of people walking around with one ear permanently underwater. Microsuction is the modern replacement, and it's the same technique used in NHS ENT clinics. We offer it at Hedon Pharmacy in our private consultation room, usually within the week.
How it works
A small suction probe and a bright lamp. We can see right into your ear canal as we work, which is why microsuction is so much safer than blind syringing. There's no water, no pressure, and you can stop at any point.
What it sounds like
Honest answer? Like a small hoover next to your ear. It's not painful, but it is loud for the few minutes the probe is working. Most people find one ear takes about ten minutes.
Should I soften the wax first?
A friendly nudge
Need a pharmacist, not Google?
Pop into Hedon Pharmacy on St Augustines Gate, or book a service online.
It helps. Olive oil drops or a pharmacy product like Earol for three to five days before your appointment makes the wax easier to lift. If you've forgotten, don't worry, we'll still do our best on the day.
Who it's not suitable for
- Anyone with a current ear infection or recent ear surgery
- Perforated eardrums (we'll check first)
- Children under 5 (we refer these to an ENT clinic)
If you're not sure, book the appointment anyway. We'll assess before we start and refund the fee if it's not appropriate to proceed.
